UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has said that Afghanistan needs access to its frozen assets so that the economic collapse of the war-torn country be averted.
Speaking in New York on Thursday, January 13, 2022, Antonio Guterres said that in the face of a humanitarian crisis after the Taliban regained power, the release of Afghanistan’s nearly $10 billion is essential both for averting economic collapse and humanitarian assistance.
Over %9.5 billion assets of Afghanistan’s Central Bank have been frozen mostly in the US banks now for over five months.
The US has been arguing that the sanctions solely target the Taliban and will not allow the Afghan people to suffer the reason which is quite opposite to the fact on the ground.
Afghan people are going through the toughest situation with poverty entering cities and people sell parts of body and children to survive.
The UN chief has also called on the Taliban to respect women and girls’ rights and allow them to study and work.
Earlier, the UN appealed record $5 billion for Afghanistan’s humanitarian crisis and Afghan refugees in five neighboring countries.
