The Special Rapporteur on Human Rights visits Afghanistan to Assess Human Rights –

Waheedullah Sediqzada 3 months ago 1 min read

Richard Bennett, the UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of Human Rights, visits Afghanistan, according to the UN Human Rights Office of the High Commissioner’s press release.

Richard Bennett, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Situation of Human Rights in Afghanistan, will visit the country from May 15 to May 26, 2022.

During his visit, Bennett would engage with Taliban officials, international and national representatives, members of the civil society and other stakeholders to discuss the human rights situation in Afghanistan.

He also described his visit as a field mission to learn more about Afghanistan’s human rights situation and to obtain first-hand information.

Later this year, he will report his findings to the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and UN General Assembly.

Following concerns about the Taliban’s human rights violations in Afghanistan, Richard Bennett was appointed Special Rapporteur almost two months ago.

His visit to Afghanistan occurs following the reports of civilian casualties in Panjshir.

In Afghanistan, the Taliban have recently placed considerable restrictions on women’s freedom, which the UN has described as concerning and UN Secretary-General called them as clear violations of women’s rights.
