Mohammad Ibrahim Khedri Turkmani, known as “Pahlawan Ibrahim”, one of the pioneers of Afghan wrestling, has died at the age of 92.
Pahlawan Ibrahim died of diabetes in a Kabul hospital yesterday, 22nd May, according to officials of the Afghan Wrestling Federation.
Pahlawan Ibrahim, also known as “Haji Qahraman,” was a well-known wrestler, according to the federation’s officials.
He was born in 1309 (1930) in the Turkmen Valley of Parwan province’s Surkh-e-Parsa district.
Pahlawan Ibrahim practiced traditional wrestling as a youth and was a part of the Afghan national freestyle wrestling team for nearly two decades.
He has participated and competed in the Olympics several times representing Afghanistan.
At the 1962 Asian Games in Jakarta, Indonesia, Pahlawan Ibrahim won a bronze medal in the 63 Kg weight category. He also competed in the 1960 Rome Olympics and the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, but did not win a medal.
