Russian Envoy to Afghanistan: Moscow May Recognize the Taliban –

Waheedullah Sediqzada 2 months ago 1 min read

Zamir Kabulov, the Russian presidential envoy to Afghanistan, has stated that Moscow may recognize the Taliban interim government and will not follow in the footsteps of other countries.

He added on Tuesday, 14th June, according to the Anadolu News Agency, that Moscow has its own criteria for this purpose and does not follow the US or any other country in this regard.

Of Russia’s prospective recognition of the Taliban de facto government, Kabulov remarked, “There is such a possibility.” “The Russian president and foreign minister determined the terms.”

He made it clear that Russia will not join the US and other countries in recognizing the Taliban regime.

The Taliban has stated that they want good relations with Russia on numerous occasions.

At a meeting at the Russian Embassy in Kabul, Taliban Deputy Foreign Minister Sher Mohammad Abbas Stanekzai expressed gratitude to Russia for its years of support.

The Taliban has been in power for almost a year, yet no country has recognized them as a legitimate administration.

Among the prerequisites for countries to recognize the Taliban are the development of an inclusive government, respect for human rights, particularly women’s and girls’ rights, and the combating against terrorism.

Following the Taliban’s takeover of Kabul, Russia was one of the few countries to reopen its embassy. Taliban ambassadors have also been given access to Russia’s embassy in Moscow.
