Several International Organizations Convene to Review the Human Rights Situation in Afghanistan –

Waheedullah Sediqzada 2 months ago 1 min read

Following reports of human rights violations in Afghanistan, several international organizations, including the Human Rights Watch, the International Commission of Jurists, the Amnesty International, the International Federation for Human Rights, and the International Human Rights Service, are scheduled to convene a meeting to assess the situation and discuss how to restore the rule of law in the country.

The meeting will be held online in two days, June 20, with well-known Afghan human rights advocates participating the meeting.

Richard Bennett, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Situation of Human Rights in Afghanistan, has also been invited to the meeting, where he will present the findings of his 11-day visit to Afghanistan.

From May 15 to May 26, 2022, Richard Bennett, the UN Special Rapporteur on the Situation of Human Rights in Afghanistan, visited Afghanistan.

Bennett spoke with Taliban officials, foreign and national authorities, civil society members, and other stakeholders during his visit to address Afghanistan’s human rights situation.

The meeting is taking place at a time when women are being denied their civil, social, political, economic, and cultural rights, according to the International Commission of Jurists.

Reports of increased persecution of ethnic and religious minorities, violations of freedom of expression, extrajudicial killings, and women’s oppression, according to the commission, demand an in-depth examination into a global view of human rights violators.
