Multiple explosions and gunfire were heard near Loya Jirga hall, a location in Kabul where Afghan religious scholars and tribal elders had gathered for the Taliban’s grand assembly, according to local sources.
According to the sources, on Thursday afternoon in Kabul, clash involving light and heavy weaponry began close to where the Afghan Ulema and tribal elders were gathered for a Taliban’s assembly.
The Loya Jirga hall was the scene of many videos that were simultaneously released on social media, in which gunshots were being heard.
The Taliban security forces had merely targeted a suspected armed element in the area, according to Zabihullah Mujahid, the Taliban spokesman, who claimed that the situation was under control.
The National Liberation Front for Afghanistan has claimed responsibility for the clash.
The assembly of religious scholars was organized in Kabul after months of effort by the Taliban, with over 3,000 scholars present in the gathering to discuss political, economic, and social issues.
The explosions and gunfire at the venue of the Taliban’s grand assembly comes although the Taliban have been executing security measures in the area for the previous four days.
